Teeth staining can happen from a variety of reasons. Most of the time stains are extrinsic, meaning that the tooth’s enamel has been discolored from food and beverages. It can be easy to keep your teeth bright and shiny once you know what to avoid and how to follow some preventative measures
Avoid Food and Drinks that Stain
Anything that can stain a white t-shirt can also stain your teeth. Beverages such as coffee, wine, and tea contain molecules called tannins. The problem with tannins is that they allow different color compounds to stick to your teeth. That means that the more beverages with tannins you drink, the more they develop a yellow hue.
Vibrant foods such as blueberries, strawberries, and beets can also cause tooth discoloration. The nutrients packed in these foods give them their bright and vibrant colors but are also the components that stain your teeth.
However, you don’t have to give these nutritious foods and beverages up completely. Just make sure to rinse your mouth and brush your teeth after eating foods that increase your chances of developing stains.
Follow Good Dental Hygiene Practices
Following good dental hygiene can dramatically reduce your risk of developing yellowish hues on your teeth.
Make sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, or even better yet brush your teeth after every meal.
Don’t forget to floss and use an antiseptic mouthwash!
Other Preventative Measures
Use a straw to keep sugary, acidic beverages away from your teeth. This will reduce the stain causing agents from coming in contact with your teeth.
If you can’t give up coffee, wine, or dark teas altogether, enjoy them in moderation. Drink plenty of water after and in between beverages. Not only is water beneficial at keeping stains away, it also is great for your overall health. Rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash and brush after drinking staining beverages.
Smoking cigarettes is one of the worst offenders for stained teeth. Smoking can cause deep rooted brown stains on your teeth that many remedies will not fix. Not only are tobacco stains hard to remove but smoking can also cause bad breath, gingivitis, and increase your risk for cancer.
Preventive measures can only go so far, and what are you supposed to do if you’ve already developed teeth stains?
Whitening services are going to be your best bet.
Many people chose to use at-home products such as teeth whitening kits, whitening toothpastes and whitening strips. You can even choose to go the old fashioned route and use baking soda on your toothbrush. There are a vast number of professional over-the-counter bleaching products at a wide range of prices. Make sure to carefully read and follow instructions.
Be aware that there can be too much of a good thing. Leaving your whitening strips on for too long can cause splotching on your teeth and increased sensitivity. Whitening too often can lead to translucent appearance or a blue hue to teeth. Over whitening can also cause your teeth to lose their natural sheen and may make them appear chalky.
