Mini Dental Implants: 5 Common Myths Debunked

At Holub Dentistry of Eugene, we specialize in mini dental implants and have seen first hand their capability to drastically improve our patients’ lives. Dr. Holub has been performing mini dental implant procedures for the better part of three decades and is a member of the International Academy of Mini Dental Implants. While we are certainly aware of the great benefits of mini dental implants, there is a lot of misinformation out there. We’d like to take the time to set straight some of the things we’ve heard others say about mini dental implants.

Myth #1: They’re Too Expensive

Mini dental implants are arguably the most cost-effective option for most patients. Traditional implants can be anywhere from two to three times more expensive and bridges need to be replaced every 7 to 15 years. Dentures can certainly be cheaper, but they don’t come close to matching the performance of dental implants which look, feel, and function like real teeth. If you’re looking to get the most bang for your buck, it’s hard to beat mini implants.

Myth # 2: Mini Dental Implant Surgery Is Painful

Mini dental implants are inserted using local anesthesia, and most patients don’t experience much discomfort greater than light pressure. Unlike traditional implants, mini implants are much less invasive as seasoned practitioners can perform the procedure without the need for sutures or bone grafting.

Myth #3: The Surgery Takes a Long Time

This myth stems from the fact that traditional implant procedures require a months-long process with a lengthy amount of recovery time. However, mini dental implants are often the preferred choice for patients because they don’t require a lengthy procedure. Depending on individual circumstances, most mini implant procedures can be completed in 1-2 hours.

Myth #4: The Surgery Requires a Long Recovery Period

Once again, this myth originates from traditional implants which do often require a lengthy recovery period. Since mini dental implants are much less invasive, there is a much shorter recovery period. Discomfort typically subsides for most people around 48 hours after their mini implant procedure whereas traditional implants can require up to a few months of recovery.

Myth #5: Those Who Aren’t Good Candidates for Traditional Implants Won’t Be Good Candidates for Mini Dental Implants

There are many requirements that patients need to meet in order to be eligible to receive traditional implants. One of the biggest factors dictating candidates’ eligibility is the quality of their underlying jaw bone structure since traditional implants need an adequate amount of bone to secure themselves. While this precludes many people from being able to receive traditional implants, mini implants are different.

Because mini implants are significantly smaller and require a much less invasive procedure, a patient’s underlying jaw structure doesn’t need to be as robust which means there are many more people who would be eligible for mini dental implants compared to traditional implants.
